Our mission is to provide a safe, confidential space for members of the LGBTQ+ community, allies, and interested persons to read, relax, and learn about what it means to be LGBTQ+ and our struggles with both identity and equality. We aim to accomplish this through providing an array of resources, offering weekly gatherings, hosting events, and developing workshops to help people of all identifications. In doing this we hope to open a civil dialogue between people inside and outside of the LGBTQ+ community and foster an amicable level of understanding with one another to help promote a mutual respect among us all.
MHC Diversity is a queer-owned non-profit based in Martinsville, Virginia. MHCD functions as an up-and-coming confidential support/social group and resource center for the LGBTQ+ community in Martinsville and Henry County. LGBTQ+ stands for "lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer/questioning." Queer was once used as a pejorative against the community but has since been reclaimed as an umbrella term to cover anything LGBT+. Questioning refers to anyone who may be questioning their gender or sexuality but aren't quite sure if or where they fit under the rainbow, so to speak.
Our volunteers and employees vary in gender and sexuality; from gay to straight, from non-binary to cisgender. We are always looking to listen to all voices in the community.
We aim to provide a safe space for anyone LGBTQ+ to relax, learn, and share their experiences without fear of judgment or retaliation.
We will be offering a variety of pamphlets and reading materials regarding identity, sexuality, terminology, coming out, acceptance, religion, laws and rights, and LGBTQ+ history, as well as books written by queer authors. Members can withdraw reading material upon request
Starting in 2020 we will be hosting weekly support/social groups for all people within the LGBTQ+ community on one evening, a youth group and a 21+ group on separate evenings, allies and concerned/intrigued persons on another, and a blend of all groups on another separate evening. Participants must register with us as either visitors or members and will consent to sign confidentiality agreements to prevent any potential harm as leaking any information shared in the group could potentially result in dangerous situations for our group participants. Members will have the option to receive our newsletter and will be the first to know about upcoming events, fundraisers, new books, and merchandise. Snacks will be provided.
